Moderna Museet (Museum of Modern Art)

The Museum of Modern Art, under the directorship of former Tate Modern and Rooseum head Lars Nit- tve, stages a variety of interesting contemporary art exhibitions. Also check out the permanent col- lection, which contains works by such luminaries as Rauschenberg, Picasso and Matisse.
Adjacent to the museum are a highly popular res- taurant and an excellent museum shop.

Liljevalchs Konsthall

This beautiful museum occupies an almost rural setting on historic Djurgården. It has an extremely popular restaurant. A not-to-be-missed exhibition – on now – is Vårsalongen, a collective display of young talent held each spring. The gallery also stages mid-career retrospectives.

Nationalmuseum

The splendid edifice fronting the water opposite the Palace houses a large collection of Swedish applied art and design. The wall of the stairwell features a famous mural by Carl Larsson. On now is an exhibi- tion entitled “Dreadful Delight”, showing ceramics, furniture and other showpieces of the grandiloquent 19th century.

Kulturhuset

In the very heart of the city, Peter Celsing’s famed ’60s glass edifice was intended to offer visitors to the downtown core something other than commercial pleasures. Kulturhuset is the venue for a wide range of activities and includes a reading room, a playroom and frequently interesting exhibits.

Arkitekturmuseet (Museum of Architecture)

Has a permanent exhibition illustrating the most important milestones in Swedish architecture. Very easy to follow, with plenty of informative illustrations and miniatures of pioneering buildings. There’s also a cafeteria furnished by Thomas Sand- ell and a good public library.

Wetterling Gallery

Björn Wetterling may have been in the business for many years, but he always seems vibrant and up to date. For instance, when he provoked the entire country by showing Nathalia Edenmont’s photographs of decapitated animals. Has also exhibited the works of the illustrator Julian Opie.

Galleri Nordenhake

The parent establishment is in Berlin, but now there’s a gallery in Stockholm too. Shows a variety of internationally recognized artists such as Olle Baertling, Esko Männikkö and Håkan Rehnberg.

Gallery naïve

Born in April 2009 Naïve is one of the most recent galleries created in Stockholm. Nicolas de Tassigny wants to create an intimate space in which art- ists and designers can present a single important work or a coherent body of work within a focused environment. During the Stockholm Design week he’ll exhibit young and talented designers such as Apokalyps Labotek (who was exhibiting at the green house last year and won HDKs price for best stand) and Argue Design.

Natalia Goldin Gallery

Natalia, the young gallery owner, has focused on Scandinavian artists and has already become known for her ability to pick out those with that little some- thing extra. Anna Camner, Sofia Hultén and Henrik Stenberg are among the artists represented.

Milliken Gallery

Milliken was opened in 2004 by Aldy Milliken. The gallery specializes in emerging and mid career artists. In addition, Milliken houses a variety of events such as fashions shows and magazine launches. The gallery was designed by Gretchen Peterson in a structure built in 1915 by Swedish ar- chitect Cirillus Johansson. Exhibition spaces include two galleries and a seperate video room.
