Mosebacke Design District – an oasis for food, culture and design

At Mosebacke in Södermalm, designers and art galleries are flanked by restaurants and shops. To feel the vibe of the area, we visited three creative companies in the design district.

Follow the cobbled streets to the top and enjoy Stockholm´s breathtaking view. This is where August Strindberg's debut novel, The Red Room, from 1879 begins. After this historic moment, see the enormous mural painting by Brazilian artist duo Os Gêmeos. Then stroll down the streets to find shops filled with unique art and design. Try the sustainable and vegan shoes at Green Laces and buy the handmade chocolate at Tales Chocolate. Paus for some craft beers and pizza at Omnipollos Hat or enjoy the food at Woodstockholm. There is always something interesting to explore, eat and shop in Mosebacke Design District.

The district is formed by fifteen creative companies and we visited three of them to get some insights about the hip oasis at Södermalm.

JR WORK SHOP (Hökens Gata 8) Mats Johansson, Illustrator, and Sofia Ekvall, Graphic Designer, at JR Work Shop.

What is JR Work Shop?

”It is a combined store and workshop. Where one can learn about creating, handicrafts and art or buy something inspiring. We have toys from our own brand Acne JR, these are designed and produced by us. You can also find interior design items, art, clothing and workshop kits.”

Tell us about your workshops.

”We have workshops for enthusiastic craftsmanship designers. Here you have the opportunity to manufacture your own products and objects, usually inspired by a traditional toy. The workshop is just as good for children as it is for adults. The participants are very happy and grateful to do something with their hands, side by side with their children. We have several regulars who return at each workshop.”

What do you recommend in Mosebacke Design District?

”Mosebacke is a very nice and vibrant neighborhood. Here, many small, inspiring companies contribute with everything from vegan shoes, craft beer, chocolate and art.It is a restful green oasis in Stockholm.”

JON ELIASON DESIGN STUDIO (Hökens gata 4) Jon Eliason, Creative Director and Senior Designer, at Jon Eliason Design Studio.

What happens in your studio?

”Half of the time we design interior architecture for cafes, restaurants and hotels. The other half we focus on product design with everything from cutlery and furniture to taps and toilets. We see ourselves as design interpreters that translate a customer’s brand into a design experience. We do not want our own style when we work on assignments, instead we always try to create new unique design concepts and forms.”

What do you work with now?

”A collaboration with Petter Stordalen and his company Strawberry, where we are drawing Copperhill Hotel in Åre and Savoy Hotel in Oslo. New Wave Group and Orrefors Jernverk, for which we have created a number of new production series and design concepts.”

Why are you in Mosebacke Design District?

”For us, it has always been important that our design and concepts should be inspired by the philosophy Better things for everyday life (Vackrare vardagsvara) by Gregor Paulson. In Mosebacke Design District there are several design actors with similar attitude. With our exhibitions and events we can get closer to the end-user to get their reactions, comments and wishes. Important ingredients when creating designs for everyone.”

RAY ATELIER (Östgötagatan 2) Saba Gedda, Co-founder, Ray Atelier.

What are you doing at Ray Atelier?

We are a design Agency that works with concepts and production from flat to spatial form. We also do pop-ups, displays, installations and set designs. We are a full-production creative Agency building brands image with focus on installations. With emphasis on the physical meeting between the brans and the client we create personal, head-turning and memorable experiences. Everything from store interior, window display to pop-ups and fair installations."

Tell us about a fun project you've been involved in.

"We were commissioned to present Tiger of Sweden's SS19 Collection in their showroom in Stockholm. We developed the environment and props. We did, among other things, sculptures with fake materials. Marbling instead of real marble and pillars of draped velvet with a foot of foam rubber. It was a mix with soft and hard, light and Heavy, fake and genuine. The sculptures, pillars and oversized body parts, were shown in seventeen window stores around Europe."

What shouldn't one miss at Mosebacke Design District?

There are so many small, lovely and inspiring shops. We like a pizza at Omnipollos Hat or a dinner at Woodstockholm. It is Always fun to check in our neighbors at Record Mania or finger on the fine jewelry at Cornelia Webb. Don't miss when the JR Workshops runs their workshops. Craftsmanship is what we are passionate about!"
